I kicked it under the kudzu and left it to the roaches."So opens the novel. Arlene has made a deal with God in return for the mishap with the Alabama god: she will never lie, have sex outside of marriage, or return to her hometown. Like other Joshilyn Jackson heroines, Arlene has a messed up mother who has been replaced, or at least supplemented, by other strong women in her life. She works hard to keep her promises, so hard that it's destroying her from the inside out. In order to set things right in her life and the lives of others, Arlene ends up breaking all of her promises, which ends up being for the best. The book has all sorts of twists and turns that keeps it interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
